Privacy is a fundamental human right. We will uphold the privacy of our users by fighting against ads, trackers and other impingements on privacy. We will never profit by monetizing your data but instead seek to fulfill our company mission by delivering a great product & service.
Our commitment to privacy and data protection is reflected in this Privacy Statement which describes how we collect and process “personal information” that identifies you, like your name or email address. Any other information besides this is “non-personal information.” If we store personal information with non-personal information, we’ll consider that combination to be personal information. Only if we remove all personal information from a set of data would we consider the remainder non-personal information.
Information Gathering & Use
SailCompanion strives to continually improve our service for our users. To that end, we learn information about you when:
- you directly provide it to us
- we collect it automatically through our products and services
- someone else tells us information about you; or
- when we try and understand more about you based on information you’ve given to us.
We use your information only as you’ve permitted and in service of bettering your user experience.
Information SailCompanion Collects
SailCompanion collects information about you, including information that directly or indirectly identifies you, if you or your other members choose to share it with SailCompanion. We receive information in a few different ways, including when you track, complete or upload activities using the Services. SailCompanion also collects information about how you use the Services. There are also several opportunities for you to share information about yourself and your activities with SailCompanion. For example:
- We collect basic account information such as your name, email address, and password that helps secure and provide you with access to our Services.
- Profile and use information is collected about you when you choose to upload a picture, activity (including date, time and geo-location information as well as your speed and performance) or post, join a challenge, add your equipment usage, view others’ activities, or otherwise use the Services.
- You may choose to add your contacts’ information to connect with your contacts on SailCompanion and to send them your activity information while using SailCompanion. If you choose to use these features, SailCompanion will access and store your contacts’ information in accordance with your instructions. By submitting such contact information, you confirm that you have the authority to use and share such information.
- SailCompanion collects information from devices and apps you connect to SailCompanion. For example, you may connect your external hardware account to SailCompanion and information from these devices and apps will be passed along to SailCompanion.
- SailCompanion may collect or infer performance information which may include speed, direction, location information. Before you can upload information to SailCompanion or information from which SailCompanion can get information, you must give your explicit consent to the processing of that information by SailCompanion. You can withdraw your consent to SailCompanion processing your information at any time. Write to [email protected].
- We may gather information from the photos, posts, comments, notes and other content you share on the Services, including when you participate in partner events or create segments or routes, tracks.
- When you make a payment on SailCompanion, you may provide payment information such as your payment card or other payment details. We use Payment Card Industry compliant third-party payment services and we do not store your credit card information.
- We collect and process location information when you sign up for and use the Services. To record your performance and to provide you with your statistics and inclusion in the Service’s features (for example, the advanced sailing metrics), it is necessary to collect and record the physical location of your device including, data such as speed and direction. Processing of your location data is essential to the Services which we provide and a necessary part of our performance of the agreement we have with you.
- SailCompanion allows you to sign up and log in to the Services using accounts you create with third-party products and services, such as Facebook or Google (the latter not available at this time) (collectively, “Third-Party Accounts”). If you access the Services with Third-Party Accounts we will collect information that you have agreed to make available such as your name, email address, profile information and preferences with the applicable Third-Party Account. This information is collected by the Third-Party Account provider and is provided to SailCompanion under their privacy policies. You can generally control the information that we receive from these sources using the privacy settings in your Third-Party Account.
- We may collect information from your browser, computer, or mobile device, which provide us with technical information when you access or use the Services. This technical information includes device and network information, cookies, log files and analytics information.
Information Sharing
We share information about you:
- when we’ve asked & received your consent to share it
- as needed to process or provide services or products to you, but only if those entities agree to provide at least the same level of privacy protection we’re committed to under this Privacy Statement
- to comply with laws or to respond to lawful requests and legal process, provided that we’ll notify you unless we’re legally prohibited from doing so. We’ll only release personal information if we believe in good faith that it’s legally required.
- only if we reasonably believe it’s necessary to prevent harm to the rights, property or safety of you or others; or
- in the event of a corporate restructuring or change in our organizational structure or status to a successor or affiliate.
Information Protection
SailCompanion implements physical, business and technical security measures to safeguard your personal information. In the event of a security breach, we’ll notify you so that you can take appropriate protective steps. We only keep your personal information for as long as is needed to do what we collected it for. After that, we destroy it unless required by law.
Other Information
As part of our normal operations, your information may be stored in computers in other countries outside of your home country. By giving us information, you consent to this kind of information transfer. Irrespective of where your information resides, we’ll comply with applicable law and abide by our commitments herein.
We don’t want your personal information if you’re under 13. Do not provide it to us. If your child is under 13 and you believe your child has provided us with their personal information, please contact us to have such information removed.

The following rights are granted under the GDPR and California Consumer Privacy Act (“CCPA”). SailCompanion applies these rights to all users of our products, regardless of your location:

- The right to know if personal data is being shared, and to whom
- The right to access your personal data
- The right to exercise your privacy rights without being discriminated against
